WILKES-BARRE — A Newport Township woman charged with leaving the scene after striking a man who died on the Sans Souci Parkway in Hanover Township waived her right to a preliminary hearing in Luzerne County Central Court on Tuesday.
Lisa Marie Yurkin, 52, of West Kirmar Street, was charged in June with accidents involving death in connection to hitting Jason Filip, 36, on Feb. 24. Filip died at the scene.
Filip, of Hanover Township, attended a cancer benefit for a friend at a reception hall on Fellows Avenue, Hanover Township, the evening of Feb. 24. He left the reception hall and went to Six Strings Saloon on Sans Souci, arriving at about 9:30 p.m., according to court records.
Bartenders told detectives they believed Filip consumed three beers before leaving at about 11:30 p.m.
Yurkin was traveling south on Sans Souci, allegedly striking Filip near the saloon. Two people leaving a credit union next to the saloon found Filip on side of the road at about 12:15 a.m. Feb. 25, records say.
Yurkin surrendered her 2002 Ford Explorer to police later on Feb. 25. She allegedly told detectives she heard a “thump” in the area of the saloon and believed she struck a deer or another animal.
Police said Yurkin failed to stop and continued driving. She denied she was intoxicated at the time, records state.
Yurkin waived the charge of accidents involving death to county court, a second-degree felony that carries a minimum term of three years in prison and a fine of $2,500.
