HANOVER TWP. — Representatives of many local charities gathered Wednesday at Navient offices to share in a $25,000 donation for the holidays, with each charity receiving a $1,000 check.

It was Navient’s 9th annual Day of Giving, which honors local organizations in Northeastern Pennsylvania for their dedication and service.

“This is Navient’s way of reaching out and embracing all of you during this holiday season,” Navient site leader Lisa Stashik said. “Thank you all for everything you do in our community.”

Stashik said Navient’s Charity Committee reviews requests for donations from local charities and decides which will receive donations. She said some of Navient’s 875 employees submit requests for support for charities they are personally involved with as volunteers. Stashik said the committee meets to discuss the requests and decides where the money will go.

Stashik said Navient, formerly known as Sallie Mae, opened in Wilkes-Barre on Beekman Street in 1987. The building is now occupied by Luzerne County Head Start, one of this year’s recipients.

Some of those receiving donations were:

• American Red Cross, NEPA Chapter

• Live with Autism Foundation

• Catholic Youth Center (CYC)

• CASA

• Cori’s Place

• Domestic Violence Center

• The Lands at Hillside Farm

• FM Kirby Center for the Performing Arts

• Catherine McAuley Center

• Family Services Association of NEPA

• Leadership Wilkes-Barre

• Osterhout Free Library

• Riverfront Parks Committee

• St. Vincent de Paul Kitchen

• United Way of Wyoming Valley

• Victims Resource Center

• Volunteers in Medicine

• Wyoming Valley Children’s Association

• Luzerne County Head Start
