NANTICOKE — A new agreement between Wilkes University and Luzerne County Community College will allow Early Childhood Education students from LCCC to “seamlessly transfer” into Wilkes’ program.

The deal covers LCCC graduates who’ve obtained an associate in applied science degree in Early Childhood Education. They will be allowed to transfer into Wilkes’ Elementary and Early Childhood Education (PreK-4) bachelor’s degree program, with junior, or third-year status.

“We have had a long-standing relationship with Wilkes University,” said LCCC president Thomas P. Leary. “Our partnership has helped thousands of students in Northeastern Pennsylvania and it’s never been stronger than in this point in time.”

Under the articulation agreement, students must graduate from LCCC with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and complete the Praxis Core or Preservice Academic Performance Assessment (PAPA) with passing scores. Graduates of the community college must also complete the Dual Admissions online application form after completing 12 credits but before he or she completes 30 transferable credits.

“We recognize the need for a trained and skilled workforce to fulfill the local need,” said Rosana Reyes, LCCC vice president of enrollment management and student development.

Wilkes University president Dr. Patrick F. Leahy was on hand to comment on the new deal.

“This is only the latest in a series of partnerships,” said Leahy. “We are trying to create opportunities for the community we serve.

“We want to make sure we are offering every academic opportunity to Luzerne County and beyond,” he added.

New trustee

Aside from the new learning agreement, a new board member was named to the LCCC board of trustees.

Joseph F. Lettiere was sworn in by Luzerne County Judge Lisa Gelb.

Leary also held a moment of silence during the meeting to mark the recent death of former Nanticoke Mayor Rich Wiaterowski.
