As the much-feared winter storm has been downgraded, state officials have lifted their aggressive commercial vehicle ban across much of Pennsylvania — but not in our region yet.

But PennDOT also has lowered speed limits as roads are beginning to become icy and slippery.

Ban status

• As of 4:30 p.m., PennDOT announced that the ban had been removed from the Pennsylvania Turnpike mainline from the Ohio state line to the New Jersey state line, and interstates south and west of the Turnpike – Interstate 70 in Washington and Westmoreland counties, I-79, I-279, and I-376.

• The ban remains in effect on many interstates and the Turnpike’s northeast extension, as well as the U.S. 22 expressway in the Lehigh Valley and the Pennsylvania Route 33 expressway in Northampton and Monroe counties.

Speed limit restrictions

Speed limits have been reduced to 45 mph on Interstates 80, 81, 84 and 380 in our region.

“Although PennDOT crews have been treating roadways, the department’s primary goal is to keep roads passable, not completely free of ice and snow,” the agency said. “PennDOT will continue to treat roadways throughout the storm until precipitation stops and roads are clear.”
