WILKES-BARRE — A request for a public hearing on a proposed tax break is among the topics up for discussion at Tuesday’s county council work session.

The session follows a 6 p.m. voting meeting at the county courthouse on River Street in Wilkes-Barre.

According to the agenda, posted at www.luzernecounty.org, the tax break would be for an eight-story, mixed-use residential and commercial building on 3.7 acres at the Waterfront Professional Park in Plains Township. The project is called 600 Waterfront.

Developer Ross Spengler owns the land and has invested $2.8 million to prepare the site for construction, an agenda submission said. The total project is estimated at $28.65 million.

Spengler is seeking council authorization to hold a public hearing as part of the process to possibly obtain a break under the state’s Local Economic Revitalization Tax Assistance program, commonly called LERTA, it said.

If the proposal proceeds, county council and other taxing bodies would have to vote down the road for any real estate tax break to take effect.
