Nearly 200 local elementary and secondary students put brushes to canvas on Monday as part of a project to raise awareness of child abuse and neglect. The “Painting for Prevention” mural project brought together students from Kistler Elementary School and Meyers High School to complete a pre-drawn 8-foot-by-4-foot mural depicting positive childhood and family experiences, against a backdrop of Wyoming Valley landmarks. It was sponsored by the Pennsylvania Family Support Alliance and hosted by United Way of Wyoming Valley. The mural concept was created through collaboration between the United Way, Wilkes-Barre Area School District and Scranton-based Heart to Art.

Dalline Espinal, Olyvia Jackson and Melanie Aguilar — all students at Meyers — take part in the Painting for Prevention Mural, which can be seen at the Fine Arts Fiesta and which will then will hang near the DA’s office at the Luzerne County Courthouse.
