A European maker of packaging for consumer and medical goods has selected Luzerne County for its first U.S. headquarters and manufacturing facility, the governor’s office announced Thursday.

Cardbox Packaging Inc. chose a 27,500-square foot facility in the CenterPoint Commerce & Trade Park West industrial park in Pittston Township. Cardbox committed to investing at least $5.3 million into the project that’s expected to create 35 new, full-time jobs over the next three years.

“More companies continue to select Pennsylvania as the best place to do business in the U.S.,” Gov. Tom Wolf said in a prepared statement welcoming Cardbox. “Their decisions are evidence of the work that we’ve been doing during the last six years.”

Mericle Commercial Real Estate Services is constructing a new industrial facility to house the manufacturing and distribution operations of Cardbox Packaging, Mericle spokesman Jim Cummings said. The address of the building is 395 Enterprise Way in CenterPoint Commerce & Trade Park West, Pittston Township.

Steel will arrive on the site by June 1, Cummings said, adding that site work is finished and they are wrapping up the installation of footers and foundations.

There are now 51 tenants in CenterPoint and together they employ about 5,500 people, Cummings added.

The state Department of Community and Economic Development offered Cardbox a $75,000 Pennsylvania First grant, $70,000 in Job Creation Tax Credits to be dispersed with the creation of the jobs and a $15,300 workforce development grant to train workers.

“Cardbox Packaging is very excited about landing in Pennsylvania and taking the first steps in establishing our presence in the U.S. packaging market,” said Michael Schaid, general manager at Cardbox Packaging, Inc. He thanked the Governor’s Action Team for its guidance and support, adding “We look forward to expanding our U.S. relationships which will result in Cardbox being able to produce innovative products.”

The company has locations in Austria and the Czech Republic. It produces high-quality and sophisticated packaging for the food, cosmetic and medical industries.
