WILKES-BARRE — An elderly man was detained by police and his nephew was hospitalized after a stabbing inside a residence on North Main Street on Thursday.

City emergency medical technicians quickly removed the victim from 477 N. Main St. just before noon. A large bandage was around the man’s neck while a older man was handcuffed and seated in a chair on the front porch. He was later transported for questioning.

Police Chief Joseph Coffay said the incident was isolated.

“We were called here for a domestic situation, two relatives, two males were involved in an altercation where one stabbed the other,” Coffay said. “We have one guy in the hospital and the other gentleman is down at police headquarters.”

There was no new information about charges or about the stabbed man’s condition later Thursday.

Coffay said he was not immediately aware what led up to the stabbing or who called 911.

Three police detectives were at the scene including a state police trooper with the Forensic Services Unit. While city police have trained officers to process crime scenes, Coffay said at times state police are called to assist.

The residence is a two-unit apartment building with detectives focusing on the first floor. Coffay said the residence is not known to be a troublesome house.
