Customers can now buy cannabidiol, or CBD products at more than 140 Sheetz stores across Pennsylvania, including locations in Luzerne County and surrounding areas, the Altoona-based chain announced Thursday.

“This is the next evolution for Sheetz in ensuring we are meeting the needs of our customers, giving them what they want, when they want it, 24/7/365,” Ryan Sheetz, assistant vice president of brand strategies, said in a release.

CBD is a cannabis-derived plant extract that is marketed for therapeutic relief from a number of ailments, including anxiety, insomnia, arthritis, neurological conditions and more.

While it is closely related to THC, the compound which causes the high in marijuana, CBD is non-psychoactive, meaning will not get users high.

In order to be sold over the counter in Pennsylvania, CBD products must be derived from hemp plants (rather than the more potent marijuana plants) and must not contain more than 0.3 percent THC. Congress last year removed industrial hemp meeting that THC threshold from schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act.

Sheetz stores will offer CBD products including topical rubs and patches, tinctures, vape pens, oral pouches, capsules and pet products.

They will be kept behind the counter as tobacco products are, with all customers required to show ID proving that they are 18 or older — which “will be strictly enforced,” the company stated.

According to a list provided by Sheetz, participating stores included those in Plains Township, Wilkes-Barre Township, Clarks Summit, Dickson City and Dunmore.
