Following is a listing of Memorial Day weekend events scheduled throughout the region.
Ashley
Memorial Day Parade, 9 a.m. Monday, May 27.
Forty Fort
Fireworks today (Saturday, May 25) from 9 to 10 p.m. Fireworks will be held at the Forty Fort soccer fields, located behind the airport on Wyoming Avenue.
Dallas
• Karen Boback’s Third Annual Veterans Ride for Honor, a Chicken BBQ & Bike Run. Registration for the bike run will be held between 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. Sunday, May 26 at Black Walnut American Legion Post 510 in Laceyville, and will culminate later that day at the Daddow Isaacs American Legion Post 672 in Dallas.
A chicken barbeque will be held between 3 and 5 p.m. at the Dallas legion post. Registration for the bike ride is $15 per driver and $10 per passenger. The barbeque itself costs $10 to get in.
• The Daddow Isaacs American Legion Post Memorial Day parade starts Monday, May 27 at 9 a.m. sharp, forming at the legion post at 8 a.m. and ending at the Dallas roundabout. A service will follow the parade at Warden Cemetery and then Chapel Lawn Cemetery.
Hanover Township
A parade will be held in the Breslau Section of Hanover Township at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 27, starting at the Old Firehouse on First Street, before eventually ending at the Lyndwood Elementary School.
Hudson
The Hudson VFW, Lani Memorial Post 6325 will hold its annual Memorial Day services on Monday, May 27 at the post home, 35-37 Cleveland St., starting at 11 a.m. Post officers and interested regular members are invited to attend the ceremony. There will be a memorial at the honor roll in Shanty Town at approximately 11:30 a.m.
Hunlock Creek
The Oakdale Cemetery Association will hold its annual Memorial Day service at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, May 27 at the cemetery. The Hunlock Creek Historical Society claim it’s one of the oldest continuing services in the country, saying it was started by local Civil War veterans.
The Hunlock Creek Historical Society says it will also be providing updates on the restoration of the Oakdale schoolhouse restoration.
Jenkins Township
The veterans memorial monument in the township’s Shantytown section will be rededicated on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27. Through the efforts of the Jenkins Township Crime Watch Organization the monument has been restored and a new flag has been installed. A contingent from the Plains American Legion will conduct memorial services at 8:30 a.m. on Memorial Day.
Kingston
West Side Memorial Day Parade, Monday, May 27. Line-up 10 a.m. at Kingston Corners, kick-off 10:30 a.m., marching to Forty Fort Cemetery.
White Haven
White Haven’s Memorial Day Parade will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 26. The staging area will be on the East Side, heading toward Towanda and Erie streets, ending at Lehigh Park. Vendors will be at the park.
West Pittston
The combined American Legions of West Pittston and Exeter will sponsor a Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 27 starting at 11:30 a.m. at the corner of Linden Street and Wyoming Avenue in West Pittston and ending at Wyoming Area Catholic’s gym on Wyoming Avenue in Exeter.
Wilkes-Barre
The Welsh Bethel Baptist Church, 290 Parrish St., will honor its seven Gold Star boys who died in service to the country in World War I and World War II. The church service is at 10 a.m. and the public is welcome.
A gold cross bearing their names was placed on the communion table on Dec. 1, 1946, and a monument honoring them was dedicated in front of the church on May 30, 2010.
The church is presently seeking a photo of one of the men, Pfc. Charles Grosspietsch (1924-1944), a Meyers High School graduate who was killed in action in the Philippines. Anyone with information should contact Jack Morgan at 570-824-9568.
