WILKES-BARRE TWP. — A free yearly dental clinic for those who cannot afford care will hold its 2019 event at the Mohegan Sun Arena in June, and organizers are arranging special bus runs to help patients reach the event.
MOM-n-PA, which stands for Mission of Mercy in Pennsylvania, is a Shippensburg-based organization that has been providing the annual clinics at different locations around the state since 2013.
Organizers expect 2,000 patients to turn out for the two-day Mohegan Sun Arena clinic, which is set for Friday, June 7 and Saturday, June 8. Treatment will be first-come, first-served with no appointments needed. Patients can begin lining up at 4 a.m.
Darcie Schaffer, manager of dental services for Wilkes-Barre-based Volunteers in Medicine and one of those helping to organize the event, said volunteers have worked with the Luzerne County Transportation Authority on bus service to accommodate patients:
• There will be four shuttle trips from the Wilkes-Barre Intermodal Center to the Mohegan Sun Arena on Friday, June 7 — 7 a.m., 11 a.m., 3 p.m. and 6 p.m.
• There will be three trips on Saturday, June 8 — 9 a.m., 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.
• For those using regular LCTA services, bus routes 18 and 10 will bring them close to the arena.
There will be two customer service concierges at the Intermodal center after 9 a.m. on Friday, June 7, Schaffer said, to help patients reach the arena. They will be walking around the island at the Intermodal and can be identified by their LCTA shirts and clipboards with bus schedules.
The concierges also will have a number of one-day passes with them for people headed to the clinic.
