HARRISBURG — The Pennsylvania State Police officially have a new commissioner, and he’s a native of Wilkes-Barre.

Colonel Robert Evanchick was voted to officially take over the role on June 4, and it was announced on Thursday.

Evanchick has been serving as the acting commissioner since March 2018.

Starting his career in the Wilkes-Barre Police Department, Evanchick enlisted with the Pennsylvania State Police in 1981, serving variously as a station commander, troop commander, director of the Bureau of Integrity and Professional Standards and a deputy commissioner of operations.

Evanchick, 61, said in a press release how he’s looking forward to formally filling the position.

“It is truly an honor to follow in the footsteps of those who came before me and serve as commissioner of the oldest, and what I believe is the finest, state police force in the country,” he said.

“I look forward to continuing to work with the talented and dedicated men and women of this department to move the agency forward in our mission to improve the quality of life of all Pennsylvanians.”
