WILKES-BARRE — A Scranton man was charged earlier this week after allegedly racing another motorist on Wilkes-Barre Boulevard last month.

City police allege Carlos Miguel Moncada, 29, operating an Acura, and the driver of a second Acura raced each other in the northbound lanes from Scott Street to Conyngham Avenue on May 26.

The pair passed two city police officers attending to a traffic stop in the southbound lane of travel, court records say.

One of the officers took off, catching up to Moncada and the other motorist at Conyngham Avenue.

Court records say Moncada was in the left lane and the other motorist in the right lane. An officer approached in between both vehicles instructing Moncada to pull and stop in front of the other Acura, according to court records.

When the officer was calling in license plates, Moncada slowly began moving his Acura forward and then took off, eluding capture by other officers who searched the area, court records say.

Police did not identify the other Acura motorist in court records filed against Moncada.

Police charged Moncada with fleeing or attempting to elude police, escape, illegal racing, driving with a suspended license, reckless driving and speeding.

Charges were filed with District Judge Thomas Malloy in Wilkes-Barre on Tuesday and mailed to Moncada.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 11.
