WILKES-BARRE — While the first-ever Wolfpack pep rally is apt to draw the most attention at Meyers High School today, Wilkes-Barre Area School District has a second event slated at the adjacent Memorial Stadium beginning 3:30 p.m., the “Wolfpack Spring Fling into Wellness.”

The big draw is a cookout with free food, music, games and prizes. District Superintendent Brian Costello has promised to take a turn at a dunking tank, as has School Board Member Denise Thomas. At a recent board meeting, Costello suggested he would talk Business Manager Tom Telesz to take a turn as well, but Telesz smiled slightly and insisted “that’s not going to happen.”

The fling starts at 3:30 and runs to 6:30. If it rains it will move across the street to Kistler Elementary School. The event is expected to draw representatives from about 35 area organizations and agencies willing to explain what they do and the services they make available.

The goal, as a notice on the district website puts it, “is to provide the community, parents, students, and teachers with information of the services of the community and district and provide a free event filled with music, games and prizes as well as a cook out and free food.”

The fling will follow the first-ever, district-wide pep rally for the newly christened Wolfpack, the name chosen for the merged sports programs of Meyers, Coughlin and GAR Memorial high schools. The separate programs ran their last seasons this school year, and the Wolfpack will debut in the fall. The pep rally begins 10 a.m. in the Meyers auditorium.
