CASA announces upcoming CASAblanca fundraiser

FORTY FORT — Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, you’ll be able to walk into one this fall that helps Luzerne County foster children.

The county’s Court Appointed Special Advocate program, otherwise known as CASA, announced its annual An Evening in CASAblanca fundraiser on Thursday.

An annual event based around the classic 1942 film “Casablanca” starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, the event is perhaps more thematically resonant than ever this year as it finds a new home at the Wyoming Valley Airport, located on Wyoming Avenue in Forty Fort.

CASA of Luzerne County has been active since 2013, aiming to link children navigating the foster system with specially trained advocates who help mitigate the significant stress these children are under. According to a release from CASA, there are currently around 70 volunteers who have been trained to serve as advocates, but 464 children in the foster system. About 350 of them are currently going without an advocate.

An Evening in CASAblanca serves as CASA’s primary annual fundraiser, and on Sept. 19 this year, attendees can see how CASA was able to transform the airport’s hangar into Rick’s Café Américain.

September’s event runs from 6 to 9 p.m. Tickets run at a price of $125 each.

If you are interested in either purchasing tickets or volunteering to become a special advocate, go to luzernecasa.org.
