It’s as though Kelly Kapoor never left her Northeastern Pennsylvania roots behind.
Actress and former star of “The Office” Mindy Kaling appears in the summer comedy, “Late Night.” Featuring Emma Thompson and John Lithgow, Kaling stars as Molly Patel, the lone woman in the writing room for late-night talk show host Katherine Newbury (Thompson). Patel is hired to revamp the struggling show as the network is trying to force Newbury off her own show. In addition, Patel wants to prove to the male-dominant workplace that she wasn’t just a diversity hire.
Kaling wrote the screenplay for “Late Night,” with Patel being a Scranton native and a graduate of Luzerne County Committee College. On its official Facebook page, the college applauded being included in the comedy and for it showing how valuable a community college education can be.
“Mindy Kaling’s character in the new movie ‘Late Night’ is from Scranton and is a graduate of Luzerne County Community College! While movies do embellish, it’s true that you can do *ANYTHING* after attending community college – just ask Tom Hanks, Steve Jobs or George Lucas,” the post read.
LCCC said it was unaware that it was included in the film.
Kaling played Kapoor on NBC’s “The Office” from 2005 to 2013. The hit comedy centered around Scranton-based employees at the paper company Dunder Mifflin. She was also a writer and an executive producer on the series, and made appearances in Scranton related to the series.
“Late Night,” released by Amazon Studios on June 7, is screening at the Dietrich Theater, Tunkhannock, at 5:15 and 7:30 p.m. Thursday. It is expected to be released on DVD and streaming in the fall.
