WILKES-BARRE — Wilkes-Barre Area School District discovered excess moisture in one room of the GAR Memorial High School Library due to excess moisture, Superintendent Brian Costello confirmed Tuesday, but both problems have been resolved.

“It was in one area we utilize at times as a small learning center,” Costello said. “It was an HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditiong) issue. We added an extra vent to circulate air better to alleviate the dampness, and did some precautionary treatment.”

Costello said there was no “black mold,” referring to a type of microfungus that can develop in damp wood and similar materials and can cause sneezing, irritation to the eyes, nose and throat, and persistent headaches. “By the teacher’s desk there was a small area of surface mold that has been treated.”

Costello stressed the excess moisture affected “the smallest area in the library” and has been resolved.
