Job seekers on the hunt at Times Leader Career Fair

WILKES-BARRE — Need a job? Looking for a change in employment? Or are you simply looking to explore your options?

Well, the Times Leader had you covered Tuesday with its Career Fair at the Best Western Plus Genetti Hotel & Conference Center.

“As usual Genetti’s provides a great place for us to host our career fairs. Our guests enjoy free parking and a room full of local employers offering multiple positions. It’s always a good day for our recruiters and job seekers,” said Kerry Miscavage, advertising director for the Times Leader Media Group.

Plenty of potential job seekers were in evidence, looking to start a new path in their lives and careers. For some, it was a matter of gaining meaningful employment while for others, it was a chance to start fresh.

“I’m just looking to gain employment as soon as possible,” said Richard Frey, a local man who has been out of work after getting hit by a car last year. “I have a diverse work background in sales, clerical work and data entry.”

Frey is still in recovery after the accident, but ready to jump back in the workforce.

Prospective employers ranged from Wise to state Department of Transportation to Navient, with a little something for everyone looking for new employment.

“We’re looking for someone to show up to work,” said Phoretta Hoover of Weis. “We have drivers, we have production staff … we’re just looking for reliability.”

For Joana Villanueva, a certified nursing assistant, the career fair represented a chance to extend her employment and find other jobs in her field.

“I’m trying to see different fields, explore different options. I’ve been a CNA for 11 years, I just want to see what’s out there,” Villanueva said.

The fair ran from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., giving workers plenty of time to explore the space and check out each of the companies represented at Genetti’s.

For the folks at Mohegan Sun, part-time and full-time employment is on tap for anyone looking. A representative for Mohegan Sun said that “we’ve got plenty of openings, and we’re looking to fill them.”

Qualities that make up a successful employment candidate, according to many of the employers present at the career fair, include a winning personality and good people skills.

Anyone who couldn’t make it to the career fair is encouraged to check out some of the companies’ websites online in order to learn more about the company and to find out how to apply.
