WILKES-BARRE — A Kingston man remained jailed Tuesday on allegations he lured a woman with a diminished mental capacity behind a dumpster and raped her.

City police arrested Fred Larry Jr., 55, of Penn Street, on Aug. 17 after he was detained by two public safety officers for Wilkes University.

The two safety officers responded to screams for help by a woman in a campus parking lot near Barnum Place just before 5 a.m. When the safety officers approached a dumpster, Larry and a woman emerged from bushes.

Police allege the woman had facial injuries and claimed she was sexually assaulted.

Larry told police the woman offered to perform a sex act for $40 but he didn’t agree to pay her, according to court records.

Police said the woman was transported to Wilkes-Barre General Hospital where an evaluation was performed.

Hospital reports indicated the woman told emergency room nurses she was assaulted, court records say.

Court records say the woman reported Larry took her behind a dumpster and removed her clothes before he sexually assaulted her. When public safety officers appeared, Larry told the woman to say they were married, court records say.

Larry told police he encountered the woman while walking on South Main Street on his way to a fast food chicken restaurant at South Main and Academy streets.

Larry was charged with two counts of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, and one count each of rape, sexual assault and defiant trespass. He remained jailed at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility for lack of $250,000 bail.

A preliminary hearing for Larry in Central Court was continued Tuesday until Nov. 26.
