WEST HAZLETON — Hazleton Area School Board member Anthony Bonomo has been charged with drunken driving and other offenses in connection with a Sept. 10 incident in the borough, according to borough police Chief Brian Buglio.

Bonomo’s alcohol level was 0.17%, which is over the legal limit of 0.08%, Buglio said.

Bonomo, 60, faces two counts of DUI and charges of careless driving and limitations on backing, the chief said.

Buglio said he could not file charges until he received the blood results from the crime lab, which arrived in recent days. A one or two month wait for results is typical, he said.

“His political position did not help or hurt Mr. Bonomo. The department followed the normal procedure on a driving-under-the-influence case,” Buglio said.

Bonomo, who is seeking re-election Tuesday, could not be reached for comment Thursday.
