HAZLETON — Former Hazleton mayor Mike Marsicano is expected to officially declare his candidacy for the Republican nomination in the 8th Congressional District.

That seat is currently held by U.S. Rep. Matt Cartwright, D-Moosic, who is serving his fourth term in Congress.

The 8th Congressional District includes Lackawanna, Wayne, and Pike counties, and portions of Luzerne and Monroe counties.

Marsicano confirmed his candidacy Wednesday, but declined comment until his formal announcement on Thursday. Marsicano said he will release a video of his announcement to the media at 8 a.m. on Thursday.

“Yes. I will announce tomorrow,” Marsicano said. “I am filed as a Republican candidate in the 8th Congressional District. I prefer to wait until tomorrow to answer questions.”

Marsicano will join the Republican field that includes Earl Granville, 36 of Scott Township; Republican Luzerne County Councilman Harry Haas, 44 of Kingston; and Teddy Daniels, 44, of Wyoming.

Marsicano previously ran for the a seat in the 11th Congressional District in 2016 as a Democrat against Republican incumbent and former Hazleton mayor Lou Barletta. Barletta won the election with 63.7% of the votes.
