WILKES-BARRE — Cries of “fair trial” and “impeach him” rang out across Public Square on Sunday afternoon as RepresentUs Luzerne County held a rally and a clothing and supplies drive for residents of Puerto Rico impacted by devastating earthquakes.

Attendees of the rally demanded Senate Republicans allow witnesses and documents to be presented during President Donald Trump’s trial.

Joe Czarnecki was the chief organizer of the rally.

“We want the Senate trial to be fair,” Czarnecki said. “We need witnesses and documents that the House of Representatives didn’t get.”

President Trump is currently on trial in the Senate for obstruction of justice and abuse of power.

In front of a crowd of 35 to 40 fierce impeachment supporters, Czarnecki opened the rally with a few remarks about the trial and about President Trump, also speaking at length about the relief efforts for Puerto Rico.

The first speaker was Peter Ouellette, one of the people responsible for bringing RepresentUs to the Northeastern Pennsylvania area.

“We must act, and we must act now,” Ouellette said.

Other speakers included Tony Thomas, the vice president of the Luzerne County Young Democrats, and Tom Shubilla, a chairperson for the Luzerne County Democratic Party.

The ralliers whooped and clapped as both Thomas and Shubilla gave intense, passionate speeches about corruption in politics and what they said is a lack of accountability being displayed in the White House. Thomas also added some of the positives he believes voters have seen since 2016.

“We’re electing more women and more people of color than ever before,” Thomas said.

Frank Marra, of Hanover Township, came equipped with a sign running down that read “No Witnesses and No Documents = No Democracy.”

“Without checks and balances, do we really even have a president?” Marra asked.

For Audrey Serniak, this rally was a chance to let her voice be heard.

“I just wanted to come out and let everyone know that this is where I stand,” Serniak said.
