PLYMOUTH TOWNSHIP — Crews from multiple departments were called to a ‘fully involved’ fire at the Flamingo Diner on Route 11 in West Nanticoke Monday night.

Calls went out around 10 p.m. for reports of a commercial structure fire at the diner, with visible smoke and flames. Units and ladders from Nanticoke, Hanover Township, Kingston, Plymouth and Edwardsville arrived to knock down the blaze.

According to Nanticoke Fire Chief Kevin Hazleton, the blaze took about 30 to 40 minutes to get under control. The fire was well involved by the time first responders made their way onto the scene.

“The building is heavily damaged, I’d call it a loss,” Hazleton said after the fire was extinguished.

The diner was closed for the evening at the time of the fire, and no one was inside when the blaze broke out. Hazleton also said that no firefighters were injured in their efforts.

There’s no word yet on where the fire originated from inside the building, or what might have caused it.

“I have a fire marshal coming in the morning to take a look at it,” Hazleton said.

Neighbors in the apartments directly behind the Flamingo were evacuated out of precaution, but they were all allowed back in after the fire was put out.
