WILKES-BARRE — The city has a buyer for another property and at city council’s work session Tuesday night Mayor George Brown on Tuesday sought approval of the sale.

Brown said Christopher Hacken offered $7,000 for the property located at 444-456 S. River St. It’s among the land thee city has listed for sale.

“I’m happy to say that we’re getting results from this,” Brown said. “And, once again, it’s another property that’s going to go back on the tax rolls.”

The property sale will be included on the agenda for council’s public meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday at City Hall.

The mayor went through other agenda items that dealt with the purchase of equipment and material to maintain the streets and roads.

With the apparent end of winter the city looked ahead to keeping the streets clear of snow and ice.

“I know you’re going to say, ‘Mayor we didn’t use much rock salt,’” Brown said, asking Director of Operations Butch Frati on an estimate.

“We used 1,400 tons,” Frati replied.

Brown continued that the city has to replenish its stockpile and, with council’s permission, would do so through a previously bid state contract.

Following through on a resolution approved more than year ago for $350,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, Brown asked for council’s approval to purchase a leaf vacuum machine.

“We’re getting an awful lot of residents telling us how bad the streets are, how bad the curbs are, how bad the drain systems are,” Brown said.

The grant paid for new curbside recycling containers distributed to residents. The remainder will go toward the machine costing approximately $277,000. The city’s share is approximately $105,000, but it will come out of the Liquid Fuels budget instead of the general fund under the original resolution from Jan. 10, 2019, Brown said. The shifting of the funding from one account to another required that the resolution be reintroduced, Brown said.

Brown added that Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of this week four street sweepers from the Wyoming Valley Sanitary Authority will be in service throughout the city. The WVSA is obligated to do the cleanups through the stormwater fee charged residents, Frati said.

Brown also asked for approval of the reappointments of Bob Hogan and Robert Koval and the appointments of attorney Ruth Whalen and James Conahan to the General Municipal Authority for a term that expires Dec. 31, 2024. In addition, he requested council reappoint Edward Katarsky to the Wilkes-Barre Parking Authority for the term that expires on Dec. 31, 2023.

The remaining agenda items were:

• Disposal of records according to the schedule set by the Municipal Records Manual amended on March 28, 2019.

• Approval of the request by Nucleus Foods to install an awning at 67-69 Public Square.

• Temporarily suspending the open consumption of alcoholic beverage ordinance to allow wine tasting at upcoming city-sponsored events.
