EDWARDSVILLE — A Kingston man was arrested at his residence on South Atherton Avenue after he allegedly stabbed another man several times on Monday.

Police said they found Robert Schnell bleeding from his neck in the parking lot of Gateway Shopping Center just before 7 p.m.

A woman with Schnell provided a description of the suspect whom police traced to Joseph Alfred Mulero.

Mulero, 20, allegedly admitted to stabbing Schnell claiming it was self-defense.

Police said they recovered a bloody knife in Mulero’s shorts pocket.

According to the criminal complaint:

Casandra Okraszewski told police she was sitting inside a vehicle with Schnell discussing about what to purchase at Family Dollar. As they were in the vehicle, Okraszewski claimed Mulero was walking past and yelled, “Are you looking at me?”

Schnell told Mulero to keep walking.

After they had words, Mulero walked toward the vehicle as Okraszewski rolled up the window. She rolled down the window when Mulero made a motion that he was going to punch the glass.

Mulero walked a short distance away as Schnell and Okraszewski exited their vehicle and approached Family Dollar.

Mulero told Schnell not to run away as he called his boy who was on his way.

Okraszewski told police Mulero had a knife in his hand and stabbed Schnell several times in the neck area and fled toward Northampton Street, the complaint says.

Police identified Mulero as the suspect based on Okraszewski’s description of having silver braces on his teeth.

After Mulero was located at his residence, he allegedly told police he stabbed Schnell but it was in self-defense. A bloody knife was found in a pocket of Mulero’s shorts he had taken off, the complaint says.

Schnell was treated for six stab wounds to his neck and head at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Mulero was arraigned Tuesday by District Judge Brian James Tupper on two counts each of aggravated assault and simple assault, and one count each of recklessly endangering another person, disorderly conduct and harassment. He was jailed at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility for lack of $175,000 bail.
