SCRANTON — Lackawanna College was named the 2015 recipient of the Outstanding Developmental Program Award by the Pennsylvania Association of Developmental Educators (PADE) on March 5 during the organization’s annual conference.

The college was recognized due to its placement policy, strong curriculum, mentoring, tutoring, and structured feedback for students who require academic development work. It also includes a program of support for the disabled, a student awards program, and frequent faculty professional development opportunities.

Lackawanna College Director of Disability Services Christine Kiehart said that the college offers three academic development courses for students who may not be fully prepared for rigorous college-level work: Basic Math, Basic Writing, and Reading for College.

Former Lackawanna College Associate Professor Deborah Hartzell was previously recognized by PADE in 2013 when she received the award for Outstanding Service to Developmental Students.

Preparing students of all abilities and supporting those with non-cognitive factors, including social and financial concerns, fits the college’s overall mission to provide a quality education to all persons who seek to improve themselves and their communities.

Kiehart said the award gives further motivation to continue to innovate and improve Lackawanna’s existing programs in order to meet the ever-changing needs of its students.
