ASHLEY — A man from Tobyhanna who borough police arrested on drunken driving offenses asked if he was in Pennsylvania or New Jersey.

Police responded to a vehicle crash on Route 309 near Bentleys Night Club finding a damaged Hyundai parked on the side and Derrick Ralph Adkins, 49, in the driver’s seat just after 9 p.m. Tuesday, according to court records.

Police alleged a bottle of wine was in between Adkins’ legs and two bottles of wine on the passenger seat.

When an officer knocked on the window, Adkins allegedly started the vehicle and drove away initiating a pursuit towards Mountain Top.

Police pursued Adkins who nearly struck several vehicles head-on as he swerved his vehicle, court records say.

Adkins stopped in the area of Pine Run Road, exited his vehicle and began walking away, police alleged.

Police said Adkins refused commands to stop and was stunned by a Taser.

Adkins allegedly had a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage and displayed bloodshot and glossy eyes and was incoherent.

Police said Adkins urinated himself before he was placed in a cruiser and transported to Wilkes-Barre General Hospital where he urinated himself again, court records say.

Police in court records said Adkins refused to submit to a blood test and kept asking if he was in Pennsylvania or New Jersey.

When Adkins was transported to the borough police department and placed in a holding cell, police said he vomited and could not remember being at a hospital.

Adkins was charged with fleeing or attempting to elude police, resisting arrest, driving under the influence, reckless driving and careless driving. He was arraigned Wednesday by District Judge Joseph Halesey of Hanover Township and jailed at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility for lack of $25,000 bail.
