The Luzerne County District Attorney’s Office has issued a warning to the public after receiving numerous reports of scam phone calls that appear to be coming from the county courthouse.

According to a release from District Attorney Stefanie Salavantis’ office, the scam calls appear to originate from the main telephone line of the Luzerne County Courthouse, 570-825-1500.

The callers claim to be phoning on behalf of a relative who needs money to get out of custody. The release says that each of the people who reported the scam recognized it as such and did not provide any personal or financial information to the scammers.

Salavantis, in the releases, urges the public to be “vigilant” in guarding their personal information, and the release goes on to say that the District Attorney’s Office, Luzerne County Prison and local police departments would not request such information via telephone.

Anyone who receives such a call is encouraged to contact the District Attorney’s Office during regular business hours at 570-825-1674. If you or someone you know has fallen victim to the scam, you should contact police immediately to file a report.
