When you think of Nat “King” Cole, what first comes to mind?
His silky voice?
Songs like “Mona Lisa,” “The Christmas Song” and “Unforgettable?”
That’s what I think of.
Join the Dietrich Theater Sunday, May 3 at WVIA as Penn State Professor Philip Mosley and jazz musician Dennis Jeter present “Unforgettable…The Music of Nat ‘King’ Cole.” During this program of words and music about the inimitable Nat “King” Cole, you will learn about his remarkable career which made him a “King” of jazz and pop from the 1930s through the 1960s.
You will not want to miss this event.
Dr. Mosley and the Dennis Jeter Band teamed up last year for a live concert at the Dietrich, focused on the life and music of Scranton-born composer Ned Washington. It was a fantastic afternoon and we are excited to have them back in the area again for another performance.
The concert starts at 3 p.m. at WVIA and we will provide free bus transportation to and from the venue. The bus will depart from the Dietrich at 1:30 p.m. The event is free, but reservations are required and can be made by calling the Dietrich at 570-996-1500. We would like to thank the First Energy Foundation, Jean Mieczkowski and the Tunkhannock Rotary Club for underwriting the event.
Another live event just around the corner is Open Mic Night.
We had a great turnout of audience members and performers for last month’s Open Mic. There were 12 poets and musicians in the open mic portion of the evening and then the Breaking Ground Poets took the stage as our featured artists. I am always so encouraged to see such great talent at our Open Mic Nights.
This month’s Open Mic will take place at 7 p.m. Friday, April 24. We invite comedians, musicians, storytellers, poets and all types of performers to join us for the evening. Our April featured artist is musician Corky Staats. This will be his second time performing at the Dietrich’s Open Mic Nights and this time he will perform songs from his new project “Mountain Memories.” It is a collection of songs he wrote about outdoor and camping experiences he had over the years.
Doors open for seating and sign-ups at 6:30 p.m. For more information about Open Mic Night, call the theater.
Rand Whipple of Box of Light Studios will be back for another day full of Minecraft and film making classes for kids on Saturday, April 15. If your 7 to 14-year-old ever played Minecraft, they will love these networked Minecraft Events at the Dietrich. They can join in the spleefing, building, grinding and raising of diamond during these sessions. There are still openings available in the morning class from 10 a.m. to noon and in the afternoon class from 1 to 3 p.m.
If your child is more interested in the filmmaking process, we encourage him or her to take part in the LEGO Film class which will also be offered that day. During this class, you will create a set from LEGOs and create a short film using stop action animation. This is a great introduction to making digital movies. You will learn how to make your characters’ movements smooth and your sound effects pop. LEGO Film and Claymation will run from 10:30 a.m. to noon
We will also offer Robotics Jr. that day from 2:30 to 4 p.m. During this class geared for 5 to 8-year olds, students will be introduced to robotics as they build a robot and teach it to move, speak, feel and wreak havoc on a balloon. Admission to these workshops is $17 per session. For more information or to register, call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500.
As you can see, the Dietrich is so much more than the movies.
