Brandon Matthews

ARDMORE — Brandon Matthews returned to Merion Golf Club Sunday in a different capacity.

Two years ago, the 2011 Pittston Area graduate was an alternate for the 113th playing of the U.S. Open at the famed course. This time Matthews was on the course, and he showed why he’s one of the hottest golfers in NCAA golf.

A junior at Temple University, Matthew captured his third collegiate straight title with a two-stroke victory at the Princeton Invitational Sunday at the Merion Golf Club. The Dupont native tied Geoffrey Sisk’s record for career wins at Temple with his eighth title in his career.

Matthews shot a one-over 71 on Sunday at the 6,502-yard East Course, home to the 2013 U.S. Open. He shot a two-under 68 Saturday at the par-70, 6,970-yard Aronimink Golf Club.

The Owls tied for second place with Seton Hall with a two-day total of 586, 15 shots behind team champion Yale (571).

Over the past month, Matthews has won three straight tournaments. In the last week of March, he posted an impressive 10-under score at the Furman Intercollegiate to take the win by three strokes. At the Met Intercollegiate on April 4, he also won by three strokes.

Temple next competes at the Wolfpack Spring Intercollegiate April 18-19.
