CLARKS SUMMIT — Seed packet giveaways, live music, information about local environmental organizations and shopping bags decorated by Howard Gardner MI Charter School students will all be found at the 12th Annual Everything Natural Earth Day Open House from 12 to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 18 at the shop, 426 S. State St.
According to Barry Kaplan, store co-owner, the free event is one that brings together people from various aspects of the community.
The Groceries Project, in which the Howard Gardner students are decorating re-usable shopping bags with “sustainable environment” messages, he said, is “a really great way to involve children in an environmental project. It’s very educational for them.”
But it’s not just the children the event aims to educate.
Representatives from local organizations and environmental partners, including Countryside Conservancy, Indraloka Animal Sanctuary and Griffin Pond Animal Shelter, will be on hand to talk to attendees of all ages about their missions, hand out information packets and accept donations.
The store is holding a Green Leaf Donation Program throughout the entire month of April, during which time customers may donate to Countryside Conservancy and write their name on a green leaf, along with a pledge to recycle, to be displayed in the shop.
The April 18 event will also feature an official Earth Day proclamation by Clarks Summit Borough Mayor Patty Lawler at 12:30 p.m., live acoustic guitar music by local musician Tom Rogo from 1 to 3 p.m. and farm-to-table food sampling with chefs from Terra Preta, Scranton and Wild for Salmon, Bloomsburg.
Each attendee will receive a free package of organic heirloom seeds, while supplies last.
