PLAINS TWP. — The Wilkes-Barre Area School Board approved some big-ticket purchases at Wednesday’s monthly meeting while passing a 2022-23 budget with no tax increase, but they also went through a long list of hires and some retirements and resignations.

The board added “purchasing agent” to the confidential secretary agreement effective Wednesday, and appointed Ann Etter as purchasing agent effective Aug. 1.

Under the Act 93 agreement that sets pay and benefits for administrators, the board appointed Sean McLaughlin and Cory Brenner as assistant principals effective July 1.

The board appointed 15 teachers: Linda Scarantino, Neyeli Tapia and Jessica Hendler as elementary teachers; Matt Kuhl as special education teacher; Janet Castrignano as special education long-term substitute; Kaitlyn Beidler as an ESSER 3 math long-term substitute for the next two years, Ed Rosengrant as a Title 1 long-term substitute teacher for the first semester of 2022-23; Sydney Hendrick, Kathie Miles, Erica Eck, Amy Rau, Karissa Wondoloski and Mary Claire Corcoran as ESSER 2 elementary long -term substitutes for 2022-23; Jacqueline Miles and Brittany Nastawa as ESSER 3 elementary long-term substitutes.

Short for Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund, ESSER money is part of the federal COVID Relief grant system. For schools there were three ESSER grants, each providing money that had to be used within a specific time frame, once the money is used, the district must either pick up the costs or eliminate the positions funded with ESSER grants.

The board accepted the retirement of Anne Leo and the resignation of Edwina Whiting in the custodian, maintenance and housekeepers category, the retirements of Grace Lecitshon and Karen Clark as crossing guards, and the retirement of Bruce Richards as security greeter.

And the board appointed Bernard Golomb and Joseph Hussage as substitute crossing guards.
