NANTICOKE — A man who allegedly beat his wife was arrested July 6 after police found him hiding in the woods, police said.

City police were dispatched to West Union Street at about 3 a.m. on July 6 for a report of a domestic dispute. The caller reported that her husband had attacked her and she had locked herself in the bathroom.

Upon arrival, police noted that one of the woman’s right eye was red and swollen. She stated she had been asleep and her husband, Joseph Skladzien, had kicked open the door, grabbed her hair and kneed her in the face, police said.

Police checked the house and could not immediately locate the suspect. He was eventually found in a wooded area behind the house.

Skladzien was taken into custody, charged with simple assault and harassment and transported to the Luzerne County Correctional Facility for overnight arraignment.
