WILKES-BARRE — Pepperjam, an international Internet marketing company based in the city’s downtown, will lay off 19 employees across the country, the Times Leader has learned.

Employees were informed of the layoff plan Friday, according to a source within the company. The cuts could come at offices in Wilkes-Barre, Conshohocken, New York City and San Diego, the source said, adding that the 19 total layoffs will amount to approximately 5 percent of the company’s workforce.

If job cuts do come in Wilkes-Barre, it wasn’t immediately clear how many employees would be affected. Attempts to reach company officials on Friday were unsuccessful.

The company was founded in 1999 and was acquired by GSI Commerce in 2009 and then by eBay in 2011. EBay eventually changed the company’s name from Pepperjam to eBay Enterprises, according to Times Leader archives.

The company was sold to private equity firms in 2015, eventually reclaiming the Pepperjam name last April. At the time, company officials said Pepperjam had plans to increase its workforce and expand in downtown Wilkes-Barre as part of the tech-centric Innovation Squared project.

Shortly after it was acquired by the private equity firms, Pepperjam acquired Digital Net Agency, another internet marketing company.
