WILKES-BARRE — Motorists on the Pennsylvania Turnpike will have to deal with nighttime closures next week.

The highway will close overnight Sunday through Thursday between Keyser Avenue and Clarks Summit for paving, says the turnpike commission’s Kathleen Walter.

Motorists are advised the Northeastern Extension (I-476) will be closed northbound for four consecutive nights between the Keyser Avenue Interchange, Exit 122, and the Clarks Summit Interchange, Exit 131, in Lackawanna County. Walter said the closure is necessary for the protection of motorists and workers.

The closure times:

• 11 p.m. Sunday to 7 a.m. Monday

• 11 p.m. Monday to 7 a.m. Tuesday

• 11 p.m. Tuesday to 7 a.m. Wednesday

• 11 p.m. Wednesday to 7 a.m. Thursday

Walter said State Police and turnpike personnel will be positioned at the impacted interchanges to assist drivers and provide detour information. Message signs will also provide information on closures and detours. Motorists are encouraged to plan travel accordingly. Work schedules are subject to change based on weather conditions.

Walter also said the turnpike is in the process of decommissioning and removing all call boxes from the roadway due to a significant decline in their use over recent years.
