WILKES-BARRE — Starting the week of Oct. 2, the city will launch a new program to identify and abate nuisance properties.

The program, named “Taking It to the Streets,” is a proactive approach and places building, health, and rental inspectors on neighborhood streets to look for building and health code violations, the city said in a press release Thursday. The program will supplement Neighborhood Impact Team sweeps that also addresses nuisance properties.

“Taking It to the Streets” will be a weekly operation sending teams of inspectors to survey an assigned neighborhood for a day. The first neighborhoods will be those with a higher-than-average number of complaints.

“This pre-emptive approach will identify nuisance properties in each neighborhood. While we will continue to address nuisance properties through tips from residents, this ‘neighborhood-by-neighborhood’ strategy will save time and energy as we tackle these properties,” Mayor Tony George said.
