Pennsylvania American Water issued a precautionary boil advisory late Friday for customers in Sugar Notch, Warrior Run, and the Askam and Preston sections of Hanover Township after a water-main break earlier in the day.
There are also water tankers available at the Warrior Run and Sugar Notch fire departments to assist residents. They should bring containers to get water from the tankers.
The main break caused low levels in a storage tank serving that area and a loss of “positive water pressure,” the utility said in a press release.
“A loss of positive water pressure is a signal of the existence of conditions that could allow contamination to enter the distribution system through backflow …,” the release stated. “As a result, there is an increased chance that the water might contain disease-causing organisms.”
The water company advises residents in these areas to not drink water without boiling it first.
Water should be brought to a roiling boil, then left to boil for one minute. Customers could also use bottled water during this time.
Meanwhile, the utility said crews are working to repair the broken water main, which should be done by sometime Saturday morning. Residents may not have any water service until the repairs are completed.
