WILKES-BARRE — A broken pipe sent water pouring out of a vacant commercial building and stopped traffic for nearly an hour on South Main Street on Wednesday night.

Water leaked onto the sidewalk and street in front of the three-story building, located at 95 S. Main St. next to Bell Furniture. Several firefighters entered and exited the building during the cleanup process.

The fire department’s Eric Anderson said he had “no idea” what caused the pipe to break. But there was “a lot of water damage” inside the building, he said.

The owner of the property had been notified of the incident and was on his way to the scene, according to Anderson.

Firefighters were first called to the building about 8:15 p.m.
