WILKES-BARRE — Verizon Wireless customers throughout the region spent the better part of Friday night without service.

The company’s network was out from late afternoon to around 10:30 p.m. for much of Northeastern Pennsylvania and beyond.

Luzerne County 911 posted on its Facebook page about the outage, telling county residents who needed to call 911 to use a landline or go to the nearest fire department.

Social media featured posts about service interruptions from Hazleton to Wilkes-Barre, Dallas and Scranton.

According to The Daily Item in Sunbury, the network was knocked out by Friday’s storm.

The Item reported that Verizon spokesman Steve Van Dinter II said multiple fiber service outages were centered mainly in and around the Wilkes-Barre, Scranton and Poconos areas.

“Our engineers and technicians are aware of this issue and are working with our vendor partners to resolve it quickly, though there may be some delays due to the ongoing nor’easter,” Van Dinter said.
