WILKES-BARRE — They came by the hundreds, hoping their numbers would be called.

Sunday afternoon’s designer purse Bingo fundraiser at Genetti’s Ballroom drew more than 250 people looking to head home with some high-class bags.

They also came for a cause.

With an entry fee of $20 advance, $25 at the door, the event, hosted by the Wilkes-Barre and Kingston Rotary clubs, benefited the Wyoming Valley Children’s Association (WVCA).

WVCA is a non-profit that offers quality early childhood education and therapy services to children with developmental delays.

“This great Bingo event was three-months in the making,” said Christine Mackin, a Rotarian and WVCA member who helped plan and organize the event.

“But we’ve had a lot of great support along the way,” she added.

Times Leader media group was a sponsor for Sunday’s event.

“We had a lot of generous donations,” Mackin said. “I think that helped with the great turnout.”

The handbags and purses from Coach, Michael Kors, Ralph Lauren, Kate Spade, Dooney & Bourke and Louis Vuitton ranged from $188-$1280. Twenty-five rounds of bingo were played.

Mackin said organizers were still calculating the proceeds later Sunday.
