Mayor Brown thanks everyone in the inaugural Diamond City Shamrock 5K
I would like to offer my heartfelt thank you to everyone who participated in the inaugural Diamond City Shamrock 5K Run/Walk the morning of Wilkes-Barre City’s 46th St. Patrick’s Day Parade on March 15th.
I especially want to thank Wilkes-Barre Special Events Coordinator Mike Slusser, and Dave Bass and Scott Paull of NEPA Racing for organizing the run/walk and Rob Sax for DJing this event and announcing during the race. The turnout of over 300 participants was more than expected, especially for a new event. I am thankful to Wilkes-Barre City’s Police Department, Fire Department, and Parking Enforcement for ensuring that each participant could run or walk safely along the route.
While the event itself was brief, the funds—totaling over $5,000—raised through donations and registration fees will have a long-lasting impact on our neighbors who are battling colon and colorectal cancer. The money raised will be donated to the Cancer Wellness Center of NEPA, specifically to support and provide resources to clients with colon and colorectal cancer.
I am also grateful to Tom Ruskey, Director of the Cancer Wellness Center of NEPA, for partnering with the City on this event and to the numerous volunteers from the center who helped with the run/walk.
We look forward to hosting the second annual Diamond City Shamrock 5k Walk/Run in 2027 and hope for an even larger turnout.
