A perplexing contradiction from John Cordaro’s “America needs Trump now more than ever” is how this writer who “cherishes normal traditional values” could recommend a world-dictator-loving candidate with four criminal indictments, 91 felony charges, possibly criminally convicted by Election Day, civilly liable for years of business fraud, financially liable for sexual assault, who incited a deadly insurrection to remain in power.

Cordaro’s “rough-around-the-edges” Trump description is nonsensical. Demagogue Trump has ridiculed people with disabilities, disparaged wounded war heroes, has a long history of racist remarks, called for termination of parts of the Constitution, ranted for years about phony “stolen election” grievances, vows retribution against political enemies and violently threatens journalists, judges, law clerks and prosecutors.

I challenge Cordaro’s “insane financial giveaway to other countries” narrow-minded argument. Remember how France helped America become a new democracy? Historian Ann Applebaum cautions: “Trump Will Abandon NATO.” Oppositely, President Biden’s leadership solidified/strengthened NATO with 29 European countries, Canada, and the U.S. providing humanitarian, financial, and military aid supporting Ukraine’s democracy-saving fight against Putin’s Russian invasion.

Congress must approve continuing aid as a powerful deterrent; a Russian victory in Ukraine could possibly lead Putin to target a member of NATO, leading to a United States/Russia conflict, putting American lives at risk.

In The Atlantic magazine’s special series “If Trump Wins,” conservative Republican writer David Frum ominously warns: “A second Trump term would instantly plunge the country into a constitutional crisis more terrible than anything seen since the Civil War.”

Is that what you really want, Mr. Cordaro?
