I would hope the Luzerne County officials contemplating a $5 registration fee on vehicles are not thinking about including motorcycles.

Most motorcycles are used infrequently, and only in good weather. That would make a tax on motorcycles regressive. When they are used, their footprint on the road, and their impact on the environment, is minimal.

Likewise, I would extend my hope for an exemption from this fee to other valid categories. Would those vehicles with handicapped tags or placards be excluded? What about POW tags or other veteran statuses?

There are those drivers with classic car tags and antique tags who, like motorcyclists, use their vehicles so infrequently as to leave a light footprint. Naturally, county-owned vehicles would be exempt! What about privately owned ambulance tags and volunteer fire company tags?

The list of questions grows.
