It’s time to take back our city.
After decades of incompetency leadership, it’s time for a change. For the past five years, I’ve witnessed the most impotent, incompetent leadership in my 27 years as a taxpayer activist and 20 years as president of the Nanticoke Area Taxpayers Forum.
Despite huge increases in the budget in the past 10 years from $3.3 million to $5.65 million, there is nothing to show for it except to see over 80 percent of the budget going toward wages and benefits for city employees; 74 percent goes toward police and fire departments; $4,216,339 to the Hanover Township police and fire budget; $2,822,858 to cover an area of 19 square miles, Nanticoke 3.3 square miles.
This is not meant as a criticism of our police and firemen, but as a criticism of decades of poor leadership that has done nothing to slow down a runaway freight train in wage and benefit increases.
A family health plan cost is $33,000. That’s the average family income of Nanticoke residents. Police and firemen average $70,000 a year plus more than $30,000 in benefits; 40 percent of Nanticoke residents are senior citizens on fixed incomes; and another 26 percent are low income families. Pittston City budgets 40 percent of income of $5.6 million for police and fire. Pittston’s downtown Main Street and business area is beautiful. It’s like night and day compared to Nanticoke. A company that ranks the best and worst places to live in Pennsylvania ranks Nanticoke the second worst community to reside in.
The earned income tax was increased 100 percent from .01 percent to .02 percent in 2007 under Act 47 distressed city status due to $7,000,00 of debt. Property taxes were increased 20 percent in 2014 and 21.5 percent in 2016, along with city sewer tax increasing 50 percent from $100 to $150 in 2016.
In spite of this poor leadership, council people and the mayor ran unopposed in the past two elections.
This year, three taxpayer activists have come forward to run for council: John Telencho, Joseph John and Michael Marcell.
We need the help of Republicans and Independents to beat the incumbent. Please help us to take back our city. Please change your registration to Democrat at least for the primary election on May 21.
You have 30 days prior to May 21 to change.
You can make a difference.
