South Wilkes-Barre sports lost one of its beloved figures with the passing of Lou Foley.

Lou was involved with many different sports programs in South Wilkes-Barre, but I remember Lou from his more than 30 years with South Wilkes-Barre Teeners as a league officer and coach.

He coached all those years with his best friend Vince Yurko. They were a great team, like Batman and Robin, or New York Yankee greats Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. If you saw the one, you saw the other. On certain days if you walked into Burger King in Hanover Township, there they’d be – Vince and Lou.

The first thing Lou would ask me whenever we ran into each other was how my family were doing. That was Lou Foley, caring and generous.

Lou was a man with a big heart. He would quietly donate financially to the league and few knew this. He wanted no fanfare or praise. I personally felt grateful for this because one of his donations paid for the sign bearing my name on the club house at Christian Field.

Because of his generosity, Teener League Baseball created the Lou Foley Unsung Hero award. Lou was not just an unsung hero but a good man.

Rest in peace, Lou.
