WILKES-BARRE – Wyoming Area’s Jesse Mikoliczyk was the leading rebounder for the Blue Friday night when it defeated the Red, 100-99, in the boys game of the Wyoming Valley Conference Senior Basketball All-Star doubleheader.

Mikoliczyk went 3-for-5 from the floor while scoring six points and grabbing seven rebounds. He also had an assist and a steal.

Players from Crestwood, Wyoming Seminary, Wyoming Valley West and Hanover Area joined forces on Team Atherton/Moses, the Blue, which was coached by the WVC’s two division championship coaches. Mark Atherton from Crestwood was joined by Pete Moses from Wyoming Seminary in guiding that team.

Team Lunger, the Red, was coached by Tunkhannock’s Spencer Lunger and included players from his team, along with Lake-Lehman, Wilkes-Barre Area and Nanticoke.

Mason Mendygral from Wyoming Valley West scored 24 points and had four assists, including one on the game-winning basket, to land Most Valuable Player honors.

Two players from Wyoming Area and one from Pittston Area were on the Red team that lost to the Blue, 60-51, in the girls opener.

Kaitlyn Slusser went 1-for-2 on 3-pointers to finish with three points, two rebounds and two assists. Wyoming Area teammate Maria Amato was 1-for-3 from the floor while scoring two points and grabbing three rebounds.

Pittston Area’s Kendall Tigue was scoreless, missing once from outside and once from inside the 3-point arc.

Slusser, Amato and Tigue were part of the Red, Team Hopkins/Mushock, which was coached by Don Hopkins from Crestwood and Mary Mushock-Namey from Wilkes-Barre Area. The team also had players from Dallas and the two coaches’ teams.

The winning Blue, Team Phillips/Gavio, was coached by Berwick’s Bill Phillips and Hazleton Area’s Joe Gavio. It included players from their two teams, along with Nanticoke and Holy Redeemer.

Berwick’s Katie Starr, who came off the bench to score 23 points and grab 17 rebounds, was MVP.
