WRIGHT TWP. — In a high-scoring game to decide the Wyoming Valley Conference girls lacrosse lead, it was Avery Bogdon’s ability to prevent goals during a key stretch that kept Crestwood in command.

Isabella Caporuscio led the high-powered offense and Bogdon made seven of her 12 saves in goal during an 11-minute stretch when that attack was sputtering Thursday as the Lady Comets handed visiting Wyoming Area its first loss, 18-12.

Caporuscio scored eight goals and assisted on two others.

Wyoming Area moved ahead briefly midway through the first half and had the game tied in the last four minutes of the half before Caporuscio scored her fifth goal and Kelsey Kulak quickly followed with two of her five, giving Crestwood three goals in 1:42 and a 9-6 lead.

The Lady Comets scored just one goal over the next 13:32, but Bogdon made sure they never lost that lead.

“Recently, she had her 100th career save,” Crestwood coach Russ Kile said. “Having a player that’s as experienced as Avery definitely helps us out in high-pressure situations.

“I think we relied on her experience there at the end of the first half to get us through.”

Bogdon made consecutive tough saves with the 9-6 lead, then, after Emma Kelleher scored for Wyoming Area with 21.3 seconds left in the half, Bogdon made one more stop with a second remaining.

Each team scored just once for more than 10 minutes to begin the second half. Wyoming Area had more chances, but Bogdon stopped the first attempt of the half. With the score at 10-8, she made three more saves and broke up another dangerous play in front before Wyoming Area could get a shot off.

Makenzie Switzer eventually brought Wyoming Area with 10-9, but Crestwood scored the next eight goals to break the game open.

Jillian Taleroski teamed with Caporuscio to lead the outburst in which the Lady Comets scored more than a goal per minute. Taleroski did all of her scoring – two goals and three assists – during that time while Caporuscio had three goals. Kulak chipped in with two goals and an assist during the streak.

Switzer finished with five goals and three assists for Wyoming Area. Kelleher added four goals.

Crestwood improved to 8-2, including 8-0 in the conference, holding on to first place in a game that matched the most goals scored by both teams in any WVC game this season.

Wyoming Area slipped to 6-1 and 5-1.

The victory also allowed Crestwood to pass Wyoming Area and take a slight lead in the race for the top seed in the District 2 Class 2A playoffs.
