Pittsburgh’s goaltending situation may be in flux. The move the Penguins made on Wednesday could impact Wilkes-Barre/Scranton first.

On the first day of the free agency period, Pittsburgh signed UMass goaltender Filip Lindberg, who starred in the Frozen Four this past spring to help the Minutemen win the national championship. He inked a two-year entry level deal.

Pittsburgh is reportedly looking to upgrade in goal after a rough playoff outing for former Wilkes-Barre/Scranton standout Tristan Jarry. The club still has Jarry and Casey DeSmith under contract for next season, and if nothing changes, Lindberg would be likely to start his pro career in the AHL.

With Emil Larmi signing in Europe, the Penguins are set to have Alex D’Orio return for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton’s roster, with an opportunity for Lindberg to impress.

He did just that in 2021, going 10-1-4 with a 1.24 goals against average and .949 save percentage to lead the NCAA and recording five shutouts.

Lindberg, 22, blanked St. Cloud State in the national title game in April, making 25 stops at Pittsburgh’s PPG Paints Arena.

The Finnish native was originally a seventh-round pick of Minnesota in 2019 but did not sign with the Wild.

Another signing that figures to benefit Wilkes-Barre/Scranton was the addition of defenseman Taylor Fedun. The 33-year-old veteran has played the last three season in the Dallas system, splitting time between the Dallas and Texas Stars.

Fedun has played 356 career AHL games, recording 181 points (41 goals, 140 assists) and has also played 127 games at the NHL level.
