JJ Walsh scored a game-high 22 points and Dom Jannuzzi added 10 as Pittston Area defeated Wilkes-Barre Area 50-40 Saturday night in Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 boys basketball, knocking the Wolfpack out of second place.

The two teams are now tied for third. Dallas, which played a non-conference game Saturday afternoon, took over sole possession of second place. First-place Hazleton Area maintained a two-game lead in the loss column.

Brandon Benjamin led WBA with 12 points.

Dallas 69, Athens 38

Down five after one quarter, Dallas scored 32 second-quarter points to take command and post a road win.

Nick Nocito nailed four of his five 3-pointers in the second quarter and finished with a game-high 21 points. Austin Finarelli added 10 of his 17 points. Mike Cumbo also hit on two baskets from beyond the arc to help Dallas to a 44-23 lead at halftime. Cumbo finished with 11.

Hazleton Area 57, Wyoming Valley West 36

Luke Gennaro scored 15 and Khalid Morrieson added 13 for Hazleton Area.

Jon Mann led Wyoming Valley West with 13.

Wyoming Seminary 48, MMI Prep 36

Isaiah Stull scored 15 points and Marc Jackett added 10 as the Blue Knights defeated visiting MMI Prep.

Brandon Brobst scored 18 for MMI.

Hanover Area 70, Wyoming Area 55

Mike Merth had a double-double of 19 points and 13 rebounds to go along with seven steals as Hanover Area defeated Wyoming Area.

Elijah Noe also scored 19 for Hanover Area, which finished with a season high in points. Melikah Gonzalez had 15 and Andrew Fleming tossed in 12.

Matt Little had 21 for Wyoming Area. Dane Schutter and Evan Melberger each scored 12.

Holy Redeemer 55, Nanticoke Area 44

Darryl Wright and Justice Shoats scored 15 points each as Holy Redeemer moved closer to clinching the Division 2 title with a victory over second-place Nanticoke Area.

Matt Prociak added 10 for the Royals.

Chris Johnson scored 13 for Nanticoke Area followed by Payton Kepp with 11 and Jaidyn Johnson with 10. The Trojans led 23-16 at halftime.

Tunkhannock 60, Crestwood 46

Ben Chilson scored 24 points as Tunkhannock built a 13-point lead by halftime against Crestwood.

Josh Brown and Garret Yuhas had 13 each.

Drew Sechleer scored 14 for Crestwood.

Northwest 46, Sullivan County 41

Gary McLendon scored 19 and Josh Miner added 12 as Northwest edged Sullivan County.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Nanticoke Area 53, Tunkhannock 45

Riley Baird scored 15 of her game-high 37 points in the fourth quarter as Nanticoke Area defeated Tunkhannock.

Claire Aufiero added 10 for the Trojanettes.

Erin VanNess scored 15 for Tunkhannock. Maci Iddings added 11.

H.S. WRESTLING

Berwick goes 2-3

Berwick won two matches at the Line Mountain Duals while dropping three, including a 36-33 loss to Pittston Area. Pittston Area got pins from Julian Everett (132) and Jimmy Spindler (160).

The Dawgs also lost 57-15 to York Suburban and 37-34 to Red Lion. They defeated Tamaqua Area 51-20 and Littlestown 42-24.

H.S. SWIMMING

Dallas, Sem pace WVC entrants

Dallas and Wyoming Seminary had the top WVC swimmers at the Ernie Shartle Invitational at Tunkhannock High School.

In the girls competition, Lydia Gonzalez (200 IM, 100 breast), Gabby Spaciano (50 free, 100 back) and Peyton Stauffer (100 free) posted individual wins for Dallas. The Mountaineers also won two relay events.

Ryleigh Collins (100 fly, 500 free) and Alyssa Kelly (200 free) were winners for Seminary, which also won the 400 free relay.

Dallas had two double winners in the boys competition — Tommy Doran (500 free, 200 free) and Maddoc Watkins (50 free, 100 free). Jason Puza (100 back) also had a win for the Mountaineers, who captured two relays.

Zhantore Akylbekov (100 fly, 100 breast) had two wins for Seminary.

Hazleton Area’s Logan Yakubowski won the 200 IM. The Cougars also won the 200 free relay.
