SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Freshman Paolo Banchero scored 21 points, fellow classmate A.J. Griffin added 13 and each had a team-high nine rebounds as No. 9 Duke handed Notre Dame its first home loss of the season in a 57-43 Atlantic Coast Conference rout Monday night.
The Blue Devils (18-3, 8-2 ACC) pulled into a first-place tie with idle Miami with their fourth straight victory for coach Mike Krzyzewski, who is retiring at the conclusion of the season and was making his final appearance at the sold out Purcell Pavilion against his former protégé, Mike Brey. Notre Dame, which entered the game 9-0 at home this season with victories over Kentucky and North Carolina (14-7, 7-3), saw its four-game winning streak end.
Grad transfer Paul Atkinson Jr. was the only Irish player in double figures with 14 points and had nine rebounds. Leading scorers Blake Wesley and Dane Goodwin, who were each averaging 15 points or more this season, were held to six and zero points. Goodwin, who had scored at least one point in 86 straight games, had entered the game with 20 double-digit scoring efforts this season.
The Blue Devils, who shot 39.4 percent, outrebounded the smaller Irish 51-36 with the 6-foot-10 Banchero, the 6-6 Griffin and 6-9 Theo John each having nine and 7-1 Mark Williams adding eight. The height advantage also contributed to Notre Dame’s 27.9% shooting (17 of 61) effort.
The game was the makeup of a Jan. 1 game postponed by COVID concerns in the Duke program, and Notre Dame led just once at 2-0.
The Blue Devils scored the next seven points and gradually increased their lead against the poor-shooting Irish (18.8%). Notre Dame closed the deficit to four, 18-14, on a pair of Atkinson dunks off Prentiss Hubbs feeds with 4:47 remaining in the half. But Duke finished on a 9-0 run to lead at halftime 27-14.
Duke doubled the score to 40-20 on a Banchero dunk with 14:42 to play and was in control the rest of the way.
Penn State 90, Iowa 86
UNIVERSITY PARK — John Harrar scored a career-high 19 points with 10 rebounds, Seth Lundy added 17 points and 11 rebounds and Penn State beat Iowa double overtime to snap a three-game losing streak.
The game featured 15 ties and 15 lead changes.
Penn State guard Myles Dread made a contested a 3-pointer to tie it at 78 with 9.7 seconds left in the first overtime, and Iowa did not hit the rim on a forced jumper at the other end.
Iowa opened the second overtime with a basket but did not make another field goal until Keegan Murray’s 3-pointer with 1.5 left, and Dread sealed it with two free throws at the other end.
Greg Lee added 16 points, Jalen Pickett had 13 and Dread finished with 12 for Penn State (9-9, 4-6 Big Ten), which played its first home game in 20 days.
Murray, averaging 22.4 points per game, scored all 21 of his points after halftime for Iowa (14-7, 4-6). Patrick McCaffery had 16 points and seven rebounds, Connor McCaffery added 12 points, on four first-half 3-pointers, and Filip Rebraca scored 11.
Murray’s acrobatic shot closed regulation when he tipped in Jordan Bohannon’s 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Penn State plays at No. 11 Wisconsin on Saturday. Iowa continues its road trip at No. 16 Ohio State on Thursday before a home game against Minnesota on Sunday.
WOMEN
Tennessee 86, Arkansas 83
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Jordan Horston scored 24 points, including the last three in overtime, to lead No. 7 Tennessee in a come-from-behind 86-83 victory over Arkansas on Monday night.
The Lady Volunteers (19-2, 7-1 Southeastern Conference) trailed by as many as 13 points in the third quarter before recovering. Rae Burrell added 21 points, including the 3-pointer that gave Tennessee its first lead, 63-61, with 7:46 left in the fourth quarter. Tamari Key scored 11 of her 14 points in the fourth quarter and overtime. Sara Puckett had 10.
Amber Ramirez scored 29 points to lead the Razorbacks (14-7, 4-4). Samara Spencer had 17, Jersey Wolfenbarger scored 13 and Sasha Goforth 10.
Horston had a chance to win the game in regulation, but her jumper from the free throw line hit the back of the rim at the buzzer.
Michigan 65, Indiana 50
ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Naz Hillmon scored 21 points, Emily Kiser grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds and No. 6 Michigan beat fifth-ranked Indiana 65-50 on Monday night for its second win over a top-five opponent this season.
Michigan scored the opening nine points of the game and never trailed to knock the Hoosiers out of sole possession of first place in the Big Ten Conference. The Wolverines had never beaten a top-five team at home, but did win at then-No. 5 Baylor in overtime on December 19.
The Wolverines held Indiana to just six points in the third quarter and their lead grew to as many as 16 in the fourth. Indiana pulled within 59-50 with 3:09 left but missed its final four shots as its nine-game winning streak came to an end.
Leigha Brown and Laila Phelia each added 11 points for Michigan (19-2, 10-1 Big Ten). The Wolverines battled turnover issues with 25, but used a 52-20 advantage on the glass for 14 second-chance points.
Michigan led 32-30 at halftime despite turning it over 17 times.
Nicole Cardano-Hillary had 16 points and eight steals for Indiana (14-3, 6-1). Grace Berger added 13 points with six rebounds and six steals, and Ali Patberg scored 10. Cardano-Hillary and Berger each made just 6 of 15 field goals and Patberg was 4 of 13 as the Hoosiers shot just 33.3 percent, includig 3 of 14 from distance.
Both teams play again on Thursday. Michigan goes on the road to face Illinois and Indiana hosts Minnesota.
